Earlier on July 17, the jury found him guilty in the shooting death of 12 people, and then refused to meet the request of the defence for the release of a young person from possible punishment.
The defense sought to free him from possible capital punishment, citing the fact that Holmes suffers from schizophrenia. The psychiatrist at the hearing on this case stated that at the time of the crime the defendant was sane.
