17:42Radical Islamists in Germany: how to recruit German youth
More and more citizens from European countries fighting on the side of radical Islamic groups in Iraq and Syria. Security services are sounding the alarm. On Wednesday, 18 June, the Federal office for the protection of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany has presented the report about activities of extremist groups in 2013. Of particular concern is the growing influence of radical Islamists, the Ministry informs. According to various sources, several hundreds of German citizens already fighting on the side of extremists in Iraq, and Syria. Serious danger is represented by those who returns home.
Attracted by ideology
A couple of years ago Denis Kuspert (Denis Cuspert) lived in Berlin and made in the genre hip-hop alias Deso Dogg. Today he is involved in combat operations as part of a terrorist grouping "Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIS) under the name of Abu Talha al-Almani. This is the most famous example, when a German citizen, who preached Salafi values, later sided with militant Islamists.
Former rapper to be the leader of group "German brigade to Milato Ibrahim"which, according to the magazine Focus, is investigating the Federal Prosecutor of Germany. Spanish investigators also reported the detention of a group of alleged militants ISIS suspected of recruiting people to send in Syria and Iraq.

Today, on the side of ISIS are fighting not only immigrants from Arab countries, but also volunteers from Europe and the USA. According to studies King's College in London, ISIS has 3 thousand foreign citizens from Western countries, including 320 people from Germany.
"We are talking primarily about young people, which apparently attracts ideology, - explained in an interview with DW expert on Iraq from the Friedrich Naumann (Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung) Falko Wald (Falko Walde). - ISIS is considered the most radical and aggressive group of militants, which operates in the region."
Difficult youth - the road to radical Islam?
Among the militants are mostly those who took another faith and identifies himself with the Salafi - especially conservative current, based on the values of early Islam. But what makes the German youth to grow long beards and go to fight in a foreign country, following the medieval laws? Young, courageous, poorly educated, who grew up in a dysfunctional family - often this is a portrait of militant Salafite, says researcher of Islam at the University of Osnabruck Michael Kiefer (Michael Kiefer).
But in order so to radicalise young people, should probably be the same by several factors. "When in a difficult situation, young people meet someone who shows respect for them, creates a sense of camaraderie and tells them what to do, it can turn into a tragedy," said Kiefer in an interview with the Hessischer Rundfunk. Located nearby to the armed struggle, the expert says.
The number of jihadists from the West grows
The fact of joining of Europeans in the ranks of radical groups are not new. According to authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany, soon after the terrorist attack in the USA on 11 September 2001, the German jihadists went to Chechnya to fight on the side of radical Islamists. With the war in Afghanistan the number of volunteers increased. Subsequently riots in Syria also became a magnet for Western jihadists.
According to the head of the German Ministry of the interior Thomas de Maiziere (Thomas de Maiziere, the radical Islamists of Germany are cooperating with the militants ISIS and in Iraq. "This, of course, causes us the greatest concern", - he said at a conference of interior Ministers of the Federal States.
However, de Mezieres gave no clear answer to the question of how to prevent unimpeded exit German jihadists in regions of tension. For his Agency is especially acute topic: talking about German citizens who at any time can safely cross the border of Turkey and back - but radical and gained the experience of warfare. A special working group is looking for legal ways to prevent their return to Germany.
Western jihadists as an instrument of propaganda
About "a growing threat" from such returnees say and at the Federal office for the protection of the Constitution. In the environment of like-minded people they are considered heroes: returning from Syria "celebrated pop stars", the Bild newspaper quoted an unnamed investigator.
However, the value of volunteers from the West among those who was at war in the middle East is not too great, believes Falko Wald: in the ranks of ISIS is more than 10 thousand fighters, and several hundreds of poorly trained members from Europe is unlikely to play a significant role.
"In ISIS they play another role - raising, - the expert adds. - For a terrorist group, it is very important to show that there are not only the militants from Iraq, Syria and the Persian Gulf countries, and that she managed to win over the Europeans". Such propaganda messages are spread very rapidly in social networks, which contributes to the recruitment of new members, concludes Wald.
The risk to state security
Security services fear that the jihadists can apply received in the middle East experience of warfare for the organization of sabotage in Europe. One such case is an attack on the Jewish Museum in Brussels at the end of may, Wald says. Unknown opened fire in the building of the Museum, which killed four people. The expert knows that the attack was organized by one of the participants of ISIS. Through participation in hostilities young people are full ideologization: "we are Talking about a radical, fundamental interpretation of Islam, which penetrates all spheres of life. And the one who devotes himself to it completely, apparently, is ready and the organization of sabotage in Europe," concludes Wald.
